Rehabilitation Medicine Associates

We are physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians (physiatrists) who specialize in non-surgical rehabilitation of sports, work, back, head and neck injuries.

At Rehabilitation Medicine Associates (RMA) of Eugene-Springfield, Oregon, we are dedicated to helping people achieve their maximum human potential. Our rehabilitation physicians provide evaluation and management, plus consultive services. All of RMA’s physicians are board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).

What is physiatry or a physiatrist?

Rehabilitation physicians are nerve, muscle, bone and joint experts who treat injuries or illnesses that affect how you move and function. Physiatrists, or rehabilitation physicians, are medical doctors who have completed medical school having earned their Doctor of Medicine (MD), and have completed a four year postgraduate training in the medical specialty called physiatry, also known as physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).

Physiatrists are medical doctors who:

  • Are experts at diagnosing and treating pain
  • Restore maximum function lost through injury, illness, or disabling conditions
  • Treat the whole person, not just the problem area
  • Lead a team of medical professionals
  • Provide non-surgical treatments
  • Explain your medical problems and treatment plan
  • Work not only on treatment, but also prevention

Rehabilitation physicians treat a wide range of people with disabilities. Physiatrists provide treatment for problems including:

  • back pain
  • work injury
  • motor vehicle accident injuries
  • orthopedic problems including sports injuries
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • shoulder injury
  • whiplash
  • chronic pain
  • fibromyalgia
  • traumatic brain injury and post concussion syndrome
  • spinal cord injury
  • disabling effects of multiple sclerosis
  • stroke
  • amputation
  • and other disabling conditions that affect the muscles, bones, joints and nerves

Our goal is to decrease pain and enhance performance and quality of life without surgery. When surgery is required, the physiatrist becomes involved post-surgically to restore function as quickly as possible.

Rehabilitation physicians take the time needed to accurately pinpoint the source of an ailment. They may do electrodiagnostic procedures such as nerve conduction studies or EMGs to help determine if the nerves are part of the injury. They then design a treatment plan that can be carried out by the patients themselves or with the help of the rehabilitation physician’s medical team. This medical team might include other physicians and health professionals, such as neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and physical, occupational, or speech therapists. By providing an appropriate treatment plan, rehabilitation physicians help patients stay as active as possible at any age. Their broad medical expertise allows them to treat disabling conditions throughout a person’s lifetime.
